A Note From The Owner

This winter has brought ice and snow to many of our customers, raising concerns about the survival of our strawberry crops. While the plants can handle temperatures as low as 20˚F, the length of time they are exposed to freezing conditions is critical. Snow can actually benefit the plants by acting as an insulator, keeping ground temperatures steady at 32˚F. However, ice or dry freezes can be more damaging, especially if temperatures dip below 20˚F for over 14 hours. Once the freeze passes, it’s essential to support the plants' recovery. Apply water and a nutrient booster to help them regain strength. We check for signs of recovery, like new leaves emerging, which indicate that the plant is on its way back. Larger, well-established plants, with a healthy root stock, are more likely to withstand freezing conditions than smaller ones with weaker root systems. Plants with the crowns exposed may not survive, therefore proper planting depth is crucial. In order to minimize loss & stress, maintain consistent care by watering thoroughly before freezes, monitoring for damage, and providing sufficient nutrients for faster recovery. To minimize the risk of freeze damage, you can place a protective covering, such as tarps or frost blankets, before a hard freeze and water the plants thoroughly to retain ground warmth. Any freezing temperatures below 32° pose a threat to destroy blooms and damage existing berries. A plant that has been exposed to a deep freeze may take up to two weeks to recover, once the weather warms up, to begin setting new blooms. From bloom to ripe strawberry, ready to harvest, it takes an average of 30 days. For more information, you can reference .... Kristell, Owner Kosub Farms Strawberries
